In John’s words

How he describes the session, in his own voice. Press a face to hear it.

Through an initial joint meditation practice with my film subjects, the invitation is to move through the ego and through the chattering monkey mind. As we then sit in eye to eye contact in an awkward and uncomfortable silence, something gradually happens.
John Oliver
And then this sort of magic happens that the person in front of me feels through the silence. We do a meditation together, and then I'm in open eye witnessing behind the camera, not asking any questions.
John Oliver
I have told people where they said nothing for forty five minutes, and I've still done an edit on forty five minutes of silence with the shifts of energy that you're picking up. All of that nonverbal is incredibly rich as well.

From those who sat

What it was like, said by people John has witnessed, each in the film it comes from.

And I got a sense during this time here that they too could have a rest because there was no need, because I was being fully seen, fully observed for now in this moment and in this space.
Martin Egan
I'm not only being seen, really, being witnessed in my fullness, in my brightness for the first time without obstacles, without contradictions.
Yasemin Hutan
Well, it was very interesting the process of, sitting with no intention. I had no, thought about what I wanted to speak about.
Krista Stanley
Absolutely no idea how long I've been here. In this It's a timeless space and that is actually quite a gift to have a timeless space.
Gina Lazenby
Je commence à comprendre pourquoi le besoin de silence. Le silence, ce n'est pas rien faire, ce n'est rien dire.
Vincent Dubourg
Everyone I film, they walk away saying the same thing. They say, I can't believe I shared that piece. I don't even know where that came from.
Kim Holl, who films witnessing portraits herself
